Focus 12: Wildfires Anniversary

Ten years ago Wednesday thousands of acres from Rocky Point to Eastport were burned by devastating wildfires.

The blaze burned for days and was fueled by extremely dry conditions and fierce winds. Flames reached 200 feet and charred up to 9,000 acres. Westhampton resident Margaret Langhorn remembers being told to evacuate, but was amazed how volunteer firefighters put their lives on the line.

Former Eastport Fire Department Chief Jimmy Baker at one point was in charge of approximately 4,000 firefighters. He says without their valiant efforts lives might have been lost and more land could have been destroyed.

Investigators say someone intentionally set the fires. They are still searching for the arsonist.
