Long Island volunteers heading to Louisiana as Katrina nears coast

(08/28/05) WOODBURY ? Some Long Island volunteers and contractors are preparing to help Louisiana residents cope with Hurricane Katrina.

Three members of the Nassau County Red Cross chapter are readying for a trip south as Katrina nears the coast. According to volunteers, help will most likely be needed on a massive scale. President Bush has declared disaster declarations for Louisiana and Mississippi anticipation of the Category 4 storm?s wrath.

LIPA representatives may also be pitching in to help with the pending damage. A LIPA spokesperson says contractors are already helping Florida residents affected by Katrina. LIPA may know by Monday if their assistance is needed in Louisiana.
