Democratic challenger goes toe to toe with Hempstead Town supervisor

The Democratic challenger for Hempstead Town supervisor is accusing Republican incumbent Kate Murray of mudslinging in her ads and using taxpayer dollars to do it.

Nassau County Assessor Harvey Levinson is firing back at Murray, who has been running cable TV spots attacking her Democratic opponent. Also, Levinson says Murray spent about $50,000 for fancy color brochures mailed to hundreds of thousands of town residents.

Supervisor Murray makes no apology for the mass mailings and says it?s about keeping residents informed about what impacts their wallets. However, Murray questions Levinson's use of his taxpayer funded government Web site.

Levinson says he will probably spend $500,000 to unseat Murray. Murray says she will do whatever it takes to keep her job.
