Focus 12: State of Our Schools - Part I

As the school year begins nearly one in five of Nassau and Suffolk students will be going back to districts on austerity budgets.

Each of the 21 districts on contingency budgets had hard choices to make and for most, extra-curricular activities were the first things to go. Plainedge High School cut the school newspaper, literary magazine, honor societies, and all of its sports. The athletic teams staged a rally raising hundreds of thousands through private donations and fund-raisers to restore sports.

Voters rejected the largest budget increase on the Island for the Sachem School District. Now they will have fewer elective courses and larger class sizes after 60 positions were eliminated.
