Sheriff to evict 50-year Patchogue resident
A 70-year-old Patchogue woman is preparing to be evicted Sunday from the house she has lived in for 50 years.
Authorities say Sarah Jones owes $29,000 in back property taxes, saying she has not paid since 1992. County officials say they have given Jones numerous opportunities to pay and even offered to forgive some of the debt. The Suffolk County Sheriff?s Office issued the eviction notice Thursday, giving Jones 72 hours to leave the premises or face removal by force.
Jones says she has not paid taxes because the county "stole" her property in the late 90's. She says she and the county have been battling ever since. Department of Social Services officials say they will have a social worker on hand for the eviction.
