Sex offender living next to school has Hempstead parents worried

A convicted sex offender living next to a middle school has Hempstead parents worried.
Records say a 33-year-old man living in a first-floor apartment on Greenwich Street raped a 15-year-old girl a decade ago. Currently, there is no law in New York preventing a convicted sex offender who has served his time and is not on parole or probation from living wherever he or she wants. Parents are asking lawmakers to step in.
Several towns on Long Island already have laws that restrict the distance a sex offender may live from a school or day care center. Now Nassau and Suffolk legislators are pushing for residency restriction laws that will apply countywide. Suffolk lawmakers are expected to vote Tuesday, while Nassau officials must resolve a power struggle before a vote can happen.
