LIPA faces civil suit that claims surcharges are unjust

A Point Lookout company is suing the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), claiming the energy supplier is using surcharges to stealthily increase rates for customers.
Doxsee Sea Clams has been in business for 160 years, but owner Bob Doxsee says he has seen a 50 percent increase in his electric bill over the past five years. Doxsee says LIPA is trying to drive him out of business with a "fuel-adjustment surcharge."
LIPA officials say they are an easy target for residents? anger over high oil prices, but that they are playing by the rules and merely passing on cost increases they incur. LIPA officials have agreed to let the Public Service Commission review fuel and tax surcharges to make sure they are legitimate.
