Candidates hope for strong turnout in LI special elections

Candidates running for State Assembly seats in Long Island special elections Tuesday are hoping for a strong voter turnout.

Officials say property taxes are a huge issue among voters in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and the possibility of lowering them may be incentive enough to draw many to the polls. In Nassau, Republican Tom McKevitt and Democrat Zahid Syed square off for a seat in the 17th District, while Democrat Ernie Mattace and Republican Phil Boyle seek a seat in the 8th District in Suffolk.

Officials say voter turnout is crucial in special elections, since the margin of victory can be very small.
