A dolphin rescued and nursed back to health by the Riverhead Foundation was released into the ocean Monday.

Seabreeze, an offshore bottlenose dolphin, was found suffering from gastritis in a Bellmore canal. Since its discovery in July, the Riverhead Foundation cared for the sea mammal until it could sustain itself in the wild again.

The Stony Brook University research vessel, Seawolf, was used to release Seabreeze about 20 to 30 miles off shore near Hampton Bays. Seawolf's captain, Steve Cluitt, said they've been waiting two weeks for a day with good weather and not too much wind.

After its release, Seabreeze will be monitored by a satellite tracking device. It is the first dolphin in the New York area to be equipped with the device.

"Very little has been done as far as tracking, so this will help us understand a little bit more about their behavior," said Riverhead Foundation Director Rob DiGiovanni.

While the foundation will track Seabreeze for research purposes, the public can follow along as well. The group's Web site will display the dolphin's movements as soon as the device is activated.
