Bellport man dies after boat capsizes

(AP) - Police say a Bellport man has died afterhis boat capsized during a regatta on Long Island's Great SouthBay.

Suffolk County police say John Everitt was participating in the83rd Annual Babylon Yacht Club Sailboat Regatta when the boatsuddenly capsized at noon Saturday. Both Everitt and his wife,Virginia, went overboard.

Race officials in motor boats helped pull out the Bellportcouple. Everitt, who was wearing a lifejacket, was foundunconscious.

The 65-year-old Everitt was taken to a hospital where he waspronounced dead at 12:38 p.m. His wife wasn't hospitalized.

It was not immediately clear what caused the boat to capsize.The 15-foot Vanguard 15 was impounded to the Suffolk Country MarineBureau.

The accident occurred south of Willets Creek in West Islip.
