Suffolk looks to spread Safe Haven awareness
Suffolk County is kicking off a Safe Haven awareness initiative in response to the recent abandonment of a newborn in Hempstead.
County Executive Steve Levy says 50 new signs will be displayed at high visibility locations identifying them as official Safe Havens. The initiative will be extended to 150 signs by year's end.
"We want them to see these signs so we can educate women that if they panic, they should not discard their baby to die," says Levy. "There is a Safe Haven available without any retribution against the mom."
