Out-of-control taxi slams into Hempstead store

An out-of-control taxi cab caused mayhem on the streets of Hempstead Monday morning.

The incident occurred on Fulton and North Franklin streets. Police believe the driver, 23-year-old Jose Gonzalez, was under the influence of drugs. He was charged and arrested. Investigators also say speed was a factor.

Two pedestrians were injured in the crash. A man suffered severe wounds to his arm and a woman had to have her leg amputated. She remains in critical, but stable condition.
