Nassau cuts 500 county jobs in union deal

Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi says the county is back on solid financial footing due to a deal that cuts hundreds of jobs.
Suozzi says the deal, the result of union negotiations, will save $50 million. County workers will also forgo two weeks? pay, which they will get back when they leave their jobs. Of the 500 jobs cut, 120 are police officers.
The number of officers on patrol will not decrease. Many retiring officers won?t be replaced and other positions will instead be held by civilians.
However, county Republicans say Suozzi can?t reduce the police force without impacting the service it provides.
