Man drowns in Mount Sinai Harbor

A Central Islip man drowned while swimming off Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai Friday, police say.

According to authorities, 35-year-old Santos Ayala was fishing with friends near the harbor at Cedar Beach when he decided to go for a swim. The strong current, however, carried him away. Despite rescue efforts by boaters, Ayala could not be saved.

"They tried to pull the guy into the boat, but he was too heavy and he drifted away," says eyewitness Gene Lent, of Coram.
