Witnesses spotted erratic minivan before crash
Investigators said Monday that several witnesses reported seeing a red Ford minivan driving erratically before a fiery crash that killed eight people on the Taconic State Parkway.
Police say witness interviews have revealed a minivan with a female operator and several children inside was being driven aggressively on State Route 17 and Interstate 87 of the New York Thruway July 26. Witnesses say the minivan was straddling two lanes, tailgating, honking and flashing the headlights.
West Babylon resident Diane Schuler, her 2-year-old daughter and three nieces were killed in the crash. Three other men in another vehicle were also killed. Only Schuler's 5-year-old son survived.
Investigators are not certain the erratic minivan described was Schuler?s, but say the timeline of events and route of travel coincide.
Police don?t believe Schuler was drinking or on medication or drugs, but are awaiting toxicology results. Initial autopsy results have ruled out a medical reason for the crash like heart attack, stroke or a brain aneurysm.
