Car dealerships across Long Island say ?cash for clunkers? is great for customers, but complain all the red tape is costing them.
The federal program trades gas-guzzlers for cash to put toward the purchase of more fuel-efficient cars. So many Americans participated in the first week that Congress needed to add funding.
Lee Certilman, of Nardy Honda in Smithtown, says his dealership has made 120 cash for clunker deals, but has only been reimbursed for eight of them.
Half of the dealers in lower New York say they're leaving the program until the government does a better job. The Obama administration says it?s adding more workers to handle the transactions.
