Giant waves produced by Hurricane Bill pounded the shore off Long Beach Saturday, prompting lifeguards to hang red flags and keep swimmers out of the water.
While the storm is not expected to make a landfall on Long Island, it may create 15-foot swells and dangerous rip currents.
Long Beach City Manager Charles Theophan says crews have been building up mounds of sand since Friday in anticipation of possible flooding and beach erosion.
In the meantime, Robert Moses State Park was closed Saturday morning when huge waves started blanketing the beachfront. Swimming was also prohibited at Jones Beach and all Southampton beaches.
