State trooper fatally shoots driver on parkway

(AP) - A New York State police trooper has shotand killed a driver following an altercation on a suburban parkway.

Police say the trooper was taken to a nearby hospital with ahead injury following Sunday's deadly shooting on the Robert MosesCauseway. The Long Island parkway connects West Islip to barrierbeach islands to the south.

Sgt. Jim Needam tells Newsday that the trooper is in stablecondition.

He says the trooper was pursuing the suspect until they came toa stop around 3:15 p.m. on the parkway over Captree Island. Therewas some type of confrontation, and the trooper opened fire.

The man died on the parkway.

The shooting remains under investigation.
