Captain warns of tricky waters after fatal crash
The boat towing captain who was first on the scene of Sunday?s fatal boat accident in Wantagh says navigating those waters at night can be tricky.
The speedboat crash killed three and critically injured four. Investigators are trying to determine what caused the boat to slam into marshland.
Sea Tow Captain John Duryea says even experienced boaters, like the boat?s driver George Canni, can have trouble making their way through the channel. Investigators say the boat veered off the well-marked but poorly lit channel at a high rate of speed.
Though he says he doesn?t know what caused the crash, it?s not surprising the boat ran aground if it was speeding in low visibility.
