LI firefighters set out on special mission

Dozens of firefighters from 20 departments across Long Island joined the "Code 3 for a Cure" crew on a cross-country journey to raise awareness about cancer.

"Code 3" founder Lt. Lorenzo Abundiz, from California, says it's a personal mission for him, being a three-time cancer survivor.

"I am gathering firefighters from all over the country...to ride with me and share their cancer survivor story," he says.

The group's 16,000-mile journey began in Los Angeles on Sept. 14. Following Saturday, they will head to Canada, hoping to return home Nov. 21. The goal of the mission is to remind firefighters to wear protective gear and get cancer screenings.
