Nor'easters wreak havoc on the Island

The torrential rains that washed over the Island this weekend encroached on homes in coastal areas and battered Fire Island.

George Gorman, of the New York State Parks Deparment, says the abnormally high new-moon tide, when combined with back-to-back nor'easters, is a force to be reckoned with.

Just several hundred yards from the Fire Island Lighthouse, pounding surf nearly washed away massive sand dunes overnight.
