Cops: Body in Brookhaven not hit-&-run victim
Police say a man fatally struck by a car on Montauk Highway in Brookhaven was not killed by a hit-and-run driver, as had been speculated.
Police received a 911 call about a man lying on the side of the road around 8 a.m. Monday. When they arrived, they say 32-year-old Elmer Mendez, of Shirley, was already dead.
Investigators say 19-year-old Kevin Daly, of Mastic Beach, called police Sunday night at around 10 p.m. to report he hit a deer while driving on Montauk Highway. Cops say they searched the area, found nothing and filed an accident report.
Police determined Monday that Daly actually struck Mendez.
No charges have been filed, police say.
