State health officials have issued a report indicating heavy metals were found in several wells near the Brookhaven landfill, confirming the suspicions of some residents.

Carmine Vasile, of Patchogue, says he?s insisted to town officials for years that the groundwater around the landfill was contaminated. Other residents also say they?ve been seeing the effects of contamination for a long time.

Responding to the state?s report, the Town of Brookhaven says it?s aware of the issue and that most of the homes near the landfill now use public water instead of well water. Water contamination levels closest to the landfill have gone down in recent years, according to the town.
