LIRR alerts riders of major service suspensions

Long Island Rail Road riders on the South Shore are in for a tough weekend.

Train service on the West Hempstead, Long Beach, Far Rockaway, Babylon and Montauk branches is either suspended or disrupted. Trains east from Ronkonkoma to Greenport are suspended.

LIRR president Helena Williams is asking for customers? patience as the rail road updates aging equipment on those lines. She says the upgrades will streamline service on hundreds of trains.

The rail road put out the word with printed fliers and station announcements as well as with video on Facebook and the MTA Web site.

LIRR advises customers to use North Shore branches or the main line.
