Off-duty cop kills would-be robber in Deer Park
Police say an off-duty Nassau County detective fatally shot a man who tried to rob him in Deer Park early Tuesday morning.
Authorities say the detective was washing his car at a 24-hour self-serve car wash on Bay Shore Road when he was attacked by two men with a baseball bat. The detective identified himself as a police officer, police say, but the two men kept hitting him.
Detective Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick says the detective was able to reach for his weapon and fired four shots. One of the suspects, 23-year-old Erik Johnson, was shot in the lower back and later died.
Police say they have the other suspect in custody.
