Falling debris leads to crashes on LI parkway

(AP) - Massive concrete blocks knocked loose from an overpass rained down on a suburban New York parkway Saturday, causing nearly a dozen cars to pile up and snarling traffic forhours.

State police say there were no major injuries in the accident on the Southern State Parkway in Wantagh.

Trooper Christopher Nolan says the outcome could have beenworse.

He says some of the stones that fell from the Wantagh StateParkway overpass were estimated to weigh about 500 pounds.

Police say the debris was knocked loose from the overpass when acar struck the guardrail in an unrelated accident. Cars on SouthernState Parkway swerved to avoid getting struck, and some collided.
