Probe approved into handling of fatal crash

Suffolk lawmakers have authorized a probe into how an uninsured, unlicensed driver who struck and killed a teenager has gone unpunished.

Herbert Guillaume hit Stephen Harrington with his car three years ago in Centereach. Police determined it was an accident, and Guillaume was sentenced to 140 hours of community service for driving without a license or insurance. He has not served any of that sentence.

Harrington's family says the case was mishandled from the start and blames systematic failures of the county's justice system.

The investigation's results will be due in 60 days if the county executive approves it.
