Life sentence handed down for gas clerk killing

Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced a 22-year to life sentence Wednesday for the man convicted of killing a gas station clerk in Hicksville earlier this year.

Jose Banegas, 25, stabbed 50-year-old Dharam Paul to death on Feb. 17 at the BP station where Paul worked. Paul had let Banegas into the store after hours because he recognized him. Moments later, Banegas repeatedly stabbed Paul from behind.

A surveillance camera recorded the entire gruesome ordeal.

"This was about as brutal a crime as I have ever seen," said Rice.
