Brentwood teen recovering after hit-and-run

A Brentwood boy is in stable condition after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while riding his bike Saturday.

According to police, the 13-year-old Michael Hayes was hit by a gray minivan at around 4:45 p.m. on Carleton Avenue. The car then fled the scene.

The 13-year-old was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center with injuries to his face and head. His father Russell says the eighth-grader is in a medically induced coma, has brain swelling, bruised ribs and a broken ankle. He will also need facial reconstructive surgery, Russell Hayes says.

Police say the minivan may have front-end, passenger-side damage.
