Suffolk: Number of homeless soared in '09

The number of homeless people in Suffolk skyrocketed from 2008 to 2009, according to the county?s Department of Social Services.

This year there are 1,475 people without a home, up from 1,138 in 2008. DSS officials say of the homeless are individuals but more and more families are also turning to shelters.

?The economic situation has created a perfect storm for so many people who have become in a desperate state and who have never sought government help before,? says Greg Blass, of the Department of Social Services.

In Nassau, officials estimate there are 442 homeless people. That?s a slight decrease from 2008.
