Teen bicyclist fatally struck by car in Smithtown

Police on Long Island say a 15-year-old boy was struck and killed by a car while riding his bicycle in Smithtown.

Police say Nicholas Svercel, of Ronkonkoma, was riding acrossRoute 347 at about 4 p.m. Wednesday when he was struck by a cardriven by 25-year-old Alex Helkin.

According to witnesses, Helkin had a green light.

Police say Svercel, who was pronounced dead at the scene, wasriding with three other teens and may have believed the light hadchanged when he started to cross the street.

The investigation is continuing.
