LIers celebrate Thanksgiving by shopping

Many Long Islanders have been working off their big Thanksgiving meals by dashing to the stores and taking advantage of pre-Black Friday sales.

The Kmart at Bohemia opened its doors at 7 a.m. Thursday, hoping to lure in price-conscious shoppers by offering deep discounts and a chance to beat the Black Friday crowds. Old Navy, Walmart and Banana Republic also welcomed early holiday shoppers.

Many major retailers made the decision to open early to boost sales and to avoid a Black Friday stampede like the one that resulted in the death of a security guard at the Valley Stream Walmart last year.
