Pre-trial hearing held in immigrant murder case

The first pre-trial hearing was held Tuesday in Riverhead in the case of one of the seven teenagers accused of murdering an Ecuadorian immigrant last November.

The court heard from Detective John McCleer, who says suspect Kevin Shea told him that another teen, Jeffrey Conroy, confessed to stabbing Marcelo Lucero in Patchogue.

According to McCleer, Shea admitted to punching Lucero and telling the other teens to surround him.

However, Steven Politi, Shea's attorney, challenged McCleer's testimony, saying it doesn't "jive" with other witness accounts.

One of the suspects has already pleaded guilty, and the trials for the others are expected to start in 2010.
