Man jumps from burning Hempstead building

A man was critically injured Wednesday morning after jumping from a burning Hempstead building.

The fire broke out at around 12 a.m. in an apartment building. Fourteen fire departments responded. Fire officials say there was heavy smoke on the fifth and sixth floors, which may be why the man jumped from a sixth-floor window. At least 10 other people were treated for smoke inhalation.

The Nassau County fire marshal says a lamp shade caught fire after a resident on the fifth floor fell asleep with lit candles. The flames then spread quickly. The Red Cross is helping several families that were left homeless by the fire.
