Vatican: LI priest not guilty of sex abuse

The Vatican announced Friday that it cleared a popular Long Island priest of sexual abuse charges.

Seven years ago, Richard Tollner, of Albany, N.Y., accused Monsignor Alan Placa of molesting him in 1975 while he was at Uniondale's St. Pius X Preparatory Seminary.

In a statement from the Rockville Centre diocese, Bishop William Murphy expressed hope that "everyone in the diocese will recognize that Monsignor Placa is a priest in good standing."

However, Tim Echausse, of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, says he believes Placa was cleared based on a technicality.

"Since the statute of limitations has expired, they say that cleared him," Echausse says.
