LIPA approves 2010 budget, new fee

The LIPA board of directors approved its 2010 budget Thursday and customers can expect to pay more each month.

Homeowners' electricity bills should rise by $2.25 a month on average. Most of the increases will pay a new state assessment tax and cover higher local property taxes.

"It may not make [customers] feel any better, but LIPA has become a tax collection agency for other governmental entities," says LIPA CEO and president Kevin Law.

Customers should begin to see the new tax assessment on the January 2010 bill.
