Gilgo Beach at risk of devastation from blizzard

Babylon officials are fearful the town's already fragile coastline could face further major erosion from this weekend's expected blizzard.

"This one, because of its strength, could cause extensive damage," says Gil Hanse, Babylon's director of emergency preparedness.

Off-shore winds are predicted to be in excess of 50 mph. Those high winds will be working in tandem with a full moon tidal surge.

Hanse says that Babylon's Gilgo Beach is in dire straits. A dune built as part of a beach replenishment 15 years ago is all that currently stands between the ocean shoreline and Ocean Parkway. Hanse warns the destruction of the beach could also have a cascading effect on other Island beaches.
