LI malls flooded with bargain-hunters

Shoppers flooded malls across Long Island Saturday, looking to exchange unwanted presents and search for post-Christmas bargains.

Some people, like Tony Caiazza, of East Northport, came to the Walt Whitman Mall to redeem their gift cards. Others went straight for the bargains, since some stores are offering 50-60 percent discounts.

According to Shopper Trak, which tracks sales and foot traffic at thousands of stores, businesses count on the week after Christmas to give their bottom line a major boost.

In 2008, post-Christmas sales made up 15 percent of annual sales at national retailers.
