Albertson couple recalls terror flight ordeal

A Long Island couple aboard the Northwest flight to Detroit targeted by a suspected terrorist this Christmas says they may stay grounded for a while after surviving the ordeal.

Calvin and Shelly Kakar, of Albertson, say they were sitting four rows in front of alleged bomber. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is accused of trying to destroy the aircraft with an explosive device.

Immediately after they heard a pop and saw flames coming from the 23-year-old Nigerian national's seat, the Kakars say crew members tried to douse the flames. Then Calvin Kakar says Abdulmutallab pushed the people away, trying to stop them from extinguishing the flames.

The Kakars say they were only on that flight because of a last-minute change in their vacation plans.
