Kings Park Sept. 11 first responder laid to rest

A firefighter from Kings Park who helped at ground zero was laid to rest Tuesday after losing a battle with pancreatic cancer on Christmas.

Jim Ryan?s family blames his cancer on toxic dust from the World Trade Center site. Ryan spent months working at the site after Sept. 11.

The 48-year-old didn?t receive an official line-of-duty funeral because New York City doesn't consider his death to be work related. Firefighters organized their own honor guard and bag pipes ceremony.

Firefighters and other Sept. 11 first responders who didn?t even know Ryan say they turned out to pay respect to his sacrifice.
