Corrections officer accused of raping inmates

A 22-year veteran Nassau County corrections officer pleaded not guilty in court Wednesday to charges he raped female inmates over a period of two years.

Mark Barber, of Levittown, worked as a grievance officer for female inmates at Nassau County Corrections Center in East Meadow. The 58-count indictment against him includes charges of rape, sexual abuse, forcible touching, official misconduct and promoting prison contraband.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice says Barber used his influence to get sexual favors from inmates, who he then provided with cigarettes, phone privileges or other favors.

Barber and his attorney deny the charges. He was suspended and faces years in prison if convicted.
