Sneaky storm lays slick ice on roads
? The roads were fairly clean on Long Island during the evening rush hour Thursday, but a surprise storm created dangerous conditions for drivers on the final morning of 2009.
Police say the weather is responsible for a 22-car chain-reaction crash that occurred on the Northern State Parkway. Motorists on the roadways say they had trouble stopping on the icy blacktop as wet snow fell around them.
Some drivers said they were annoyed at the lack of plows on the road. However, Hempstead Town Sanitation Department Commissioner Richard Ronan says with 1,700 miles of road for his crews to cover, drivers may not always be able to spot the plows that are out clearing streets.
