Sen. Chuck Schumer is calling for $100 million in emergency federal funding to stop heroin trafficking in the area.

The move is a new push to try to close the floodgates on heroin coming to the Island.

Officials say that the Long Island Expressway is now known as the Heroin Highway because young people are going to the five boroughs and coming back to the suburbs with large volumes of heroin.

The additional funds Sen. Schumer wants will go toward a program called High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas, or HITDA. The program works to figure out where drug rings are and who they are selling to, and then aims to put them out of business.

Sen. Schumer says the number of heroin seizures so far this year is more than any year since 1991.

The plan needs federal approval before it can be implemented.
