Long Islanders pack beaches for warm Memorial Day
Sunny skies and temperatures that touched 80 degrees sent crowds of Long Islanders to the beach Monday to mark the unofficial start of summer.
The state Department of Parks and Recreation says as many as 125,000 people packed onto the sand at Jones Beach today.
Extra police officers and lifeguards were on duty.
Officials say Robert Moses and Belmont Lake parks were also at full capacity today. Some would-be beachgoers had to be turned away.
