The Nassau County district attorney is investigating the Hempstead school board vote following allegations of voter fraud and intimidation.

Attorney Frederick Brewington represents school board candidate Maribel Toure, who lost by six votes to longtime incumbent School Board President Betty Cross. Brewington claims many last-minute absentee ballots, some of which were handwritten, may have been illegal.

At a press conference held by Cross supporters, where she refused to speak, they explained the election was close because "outsiders" tried to get their candidates on the board. They would not explain what they meant by "outsiders."

Brewington is appealing the election results to the state education commissioner. The New York State Department of Education says any decision on the vote could take several months.
