A Florida state trooper originally from Long Island was honored posthumously at Brookhaven Town Hall Thursday, weeks after she was killed in a car accident.

Florida Highway Patrol Master Trooper Chelsea Richard was born in Patchogue and graduated from Patchogue-Medford High School in 2001. After working as a Brookhaven Town Public Safety Officer, she moved to Florida to pursue her dream of becoming a state trooper.

Richard was killed on May 3, a week before she turned 31, while investigating a traffic accident on I-75. Police say she was out of her patrol car when she was hit and killed by a pickup truck. Two others standing by her were also killed.

Richard's father, Bruce, says the pickup truck's driver was speeding and failed to obey Florida's "Move Over" law. The law requires drivers to slow down and move to the next lane when passing a stopped emergency vehicle. As a result of the accident, Florida Gov. Rick Scott vetoed a bill that would have raised the speed limit in Florida to 75 mph.

At Brookhaven Town Hall, a flag was raised in Richard's memory.

Richard is survived by her 4-year-old son.
