Paterson signs identity theft protection bill

In the first days of the new year, Gov. David Paterson signed a new legislation aimed at protecting people from identity theft.

The bill places significant restrictions on governmental disclosure of social security numbers. It also makes it a crime to own a skimming device - an electronic gadget used to steal personal information from credit cards.

"If it really gets implemented and really works, then that would be great," says Andrea Sklar, of Jericho.

Another new law passed in 2010 authorizes the use of titles, initials or abbreviations of names as signatures on absentee ballots.
