Hempstead Turnpike on list of dangerous roads

Hempstead Turnpike has topped the list of the most dangerous roads for pedestrians in the tri-state area.

The Tri-State Transportation Campaign released a new report Wednesday, which states that 13 people were killed between 2006 and 2008 along Hempstead Turnpike, mostly in Hempstead, Franklin Square and Elmont.

Sunrise Highway was listed at number two, with 11 pedestrian deaths between the same years.

Heather Sporn, of the New York State DOT, says a new pilot program called Safe Seniors is being tested on some Long Island roads.

Also on the list were Middle County Road with nine fatalities and Merrick Road with seven.
