Owner accused of trying to torch bagel shop

The owner of a Commack bagel shop is accused of trying to torch his own store Thursday, allegedly because of financial problems.

According to court documents, Bagel Cafe owner Salvatore Dirato used a crow bar to smash the store?s ATM, turned on the oven and left around 6 p.m.

Employees at the pizzeria next door say they smelled smoke and called police.

Bagel store employee Rachel Alexander says Dirato began smashing items in the shop in an outburst that night. Alexander says it was all because he was losing money.

Dirato is charged with attempted arson and criminal mischief.
