Police: Man shot by cop not involved in robbery

A preliminary investigation indicates that a man shot by police early Monday morning in Huntington was not involved in the robbery of a Taco Bell restaurant as initially suspected, according to Suffolk police.

Investigators say a 14-year veteran of the force stopped a car with three men inside shortly after the robbery of the New York Avenue restaurant.

The officer ordered the men to put their hands up, but according to police the driver got out of the car and a backseat passenger allegedly didn?t follow police orders. The officer discharged his weapon and struck a 31-year-old man in the abdomen, police say.

In a news release sent out Monday afternoon, police said their initial investigation indicated that the three individuals were not involved in the robbery.

According to police, the passengers of the cars said they had been drinking. Police say that may have led to the confusion.
